Geothermal Exploration Wells in China

May 9th,2024 1458 Views
According to Sinopec, on April 8th, the Fushen Hot 1 well deployed in Hainan was successfully completed with a depth of 5200 meters, setting a new record for the deepest geothermal scientific exploration well in China.
This move reveals the mechanism of deep geothermal formation and enrichment in South China, indicating new breakthroughs in regional and depth exploration of dry hot rocks in China.
It is reported that Fushen Hot 1 Well is a key geothermal exploration well deployed by the China Petroleum Exploration and Development Research Institute. The drilling target is granite from 250 million years ago, and it belongs to the deep dry hot rock geothermal well. The drilling started in August 2023.
It applies multiple innovative technologies independently developed by Sinopec, such as "dual drive drilling+high-pressure injection", and the temperature exceeds 150 ℃ at a depth of nearly 3900 meters, reaching the high-temperature geothermal standard.
The temperature below 5000 meters exceeds 180 ℃, reaching the dry hot rock temperature limit specified by the national energy industry standard, forming a key technology for deep geothermal resource exploration and evaluation, and meeting the expected goals and task requirements of scientific exploration wells.
Next, Sinopec will continue to carry out in-depth research and on-site experiments, establish the first deep geothermal industry academia research integrated on-site experimental research platform and development and utilization demonstration platform in southern China, explore the formation of theoretical methods and technical systems suitable for the southern region, and help China achieve the "dual carbon" goal.
Nova Energy Company introuduced that Geothermal energy is a stable, reliable, green, and low-carbon renewable energy source, characterized by large reserves, wide distribution, and clean environmental protection.
At present, the development and utilization of geothermal resources in China are mainly based on shallow and medium deep hydrothermal geothermal types, while the development of deep geothermal resources, especially dry hot rock resources, buried below 3000 meters is still in the exploratory stage.
Dry hot rock generally refers to high-temperature rocks buried thousands of meters underground with a temperature greater than 180 degrees Celsius and no or only a small amount of fluid inside.
According to the China Geological Survey, the amount of dry hot rock geothermal resources within a range of 3000 to 10000 meters underground in China's land areas is equivalent to 856 trillion tons of standard coal. Even if only 2% is extracted, it is equivalent to 2993 times the annual energy consumption in China in 2023.
So far, Sinopec has accumulated a geothermal heating capacity of nearly 100 million square meters, and has built multiple regional geothermal heating projects with a scale of millions of square meters. Among them, the geothermal heating project built in Xiong'an New Area has been included in the global promotion project list by the International Renewable Energy Agency.
Sinopec has also taken the lead in formulating over 50% of the geothermal industry standards, as well as China's first international geothermal association standard in the global geothermal field, and successfully held the 2023 World Geothermal Congress.
